News Story
Last week we hosted our sold-out History Tours. We welcomed 50 people to our Theatre to marvel at our iconic Victorian theatre architecture and learn more detail about the rich history of our building.
Did you know that this year we are celebrating our 130 Year Anniversary? Our theatre was first built in 1894 and was originally named ‘The Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House’. You may have noticed that the exterior of our building still references this old name. The theatre was originally built by renowned Victorian theatre architect, Frank Matcham. We are now only one of 20 Matcham theatres left in the UK, others being the London Palladium, Grand Theatre Blackpool and Hackney Empire.
